Josanne Kissel Pagel PAs in Administration Award

The Josanne Kissel Pagel PAs in Administration Award aims to benefit, encourage, and support PAs presently serving in administrative positions in health systems who are focused on enhancing their administrative skills as well as dedicated to promoting opportunities for other PAs in pursuing administrative roles in health systems and/or medical practices. The award is intended to help fund the recipient’s attendance at the AAPA Executive Leadership Conference (ELC) in the subsequent year to facilitate networking with other future executive administrators.

Nominations for this award may be submitted by a third party (e.g., a colleague, supervisor, or peer familiar with the nominee’s qualifications and contributions) or as a self-nomination.

One award of $1,500 will be given yearly to be used towards registration and travel/lodging costs for the AAPA Executive Leadership Conference. If the recipient does not attend the ELC, they forfeit their award.

Eligibility Criteria and Considerations

Nominations for this award may be submitted by a third party (e.g., a colleague, supervisor, or peer familiar with the nominee’s qualifications and contributions) or as a self-nomination.

Applicant/nominee must:

  • Be a Fellow member in good standing of AAPA
  • Be presently employed as a PA administrator in a clinically practicing health system or medical practice (may be employed full time as a PA administrator or part time with clinical practice to equal full-time position)
  • Be in their first five years of a clinically administrative position
  • Demonstrate record of collaborative work with other healthcare providers
  • Demonstrate strong history of leading and advocating for PA practice
  • Be available and willing to attend the AAPA Executive Leadership Conference in the following year (2026 ELC: date/location pending)
Application Requirements

The application form will include the following sections/required components, to be completed by the applicant (if self-nomination) or nominator (if third-party nomination):

  • General information about the applicant/nominee
  • Short answer questions:
    • Describe the nominee’s experience in administration.
    • Describe the nominee’s administrative philosophy. Why do they feel it is important for PAs to have a seat at the table in administration? What part do they play in advancing PAs in administration?
  •  Essay:
    • Describe how this administrative PA affects PA practice, advocates for PAs in the health system, and contributes to decision making in the health system.
  • Required documents/uploads:
    • Nominee’s CV
    • Letter of recommendation from supervisor/CEO/executive leader in health system/medical practice describing the nominee’s work and contributions to the health system/medical practice as an administrator and confirming the nominee’s ability to attend the 2026 Executive Leadership Conference

The 2025 Josanne Kissel Pagel PAs in Administration Award cycle will open July 14.

Josanne has served in various roles for AAPA and the PA Foundation. She served as a trustee on the PA Foundation Board from 2005-2009, including in the role of vice president, and assisted with PAF resource development and programs from 2005-2007. She was elected Secretary/Treasurer of AAPA for the 2012-2014 term and served as AAPA President from 2016-2017.
